Avani Lekhara: Paralympics ,becomes first Indian woman to win gold …

Shooter Avani Lekhara scripted history on August 30 as she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, firing her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event here.

The 19-year-old finished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record.

She’s the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).

Avani Lekhara: Paralympics : In the SH1 Rifle category, shooters are able to hold a gun with arms. The athletes have an impairment in their legs, for example amputations or paraplegia. Some athletes will compete in a seated position, while others will compete in a standing position.

Avani Lekhara grew up idolising Abhinav Bindra and on Monday, the 19-year-old ended up emulating the 2008 Olympic gold medallist. While Bindra was the first Indian individual athlete to win an Olympic gold, Lekhara became the first Indian female athlete to win gold at the Paralympics.

Lekhara cites Bindra’s 2011 autobiography as a major source of inspiration for her. “When I started shooting I saw him as an idol. I just wanted to become like him, he is an inspiration to me,” she told Sports Today.

Avani Lekhara is the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold.

She had initially tried her hand at archery as well after her father pushed her into sports. Eventually, she settled in on rifle shooting as her primary sport. Lekhara announced herself at the international stage when she won silver at the IPC Para Shooting World Cup in 2017 and added another silver at the 2019 Para Shooting World Cup in Osijek, Croatia.
