Dattatreya Jayanti 2021: The Legend of Lord Dattatreya
Once the three gods Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh reached the earth to test the virtuous religion of Anasuya, the wife of Maharishi Atri Muni. The three gods reached the ashram of Atri Muni in disguise and expressed their desire for food in front of Mother Anasuya. The three gods placed a condition that he should feed them naked. On this the mother got confused.
When he looked after meditation, he saw Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh standing in the form of sadhus standing in front. When Mata Anasuya took out water from Atrimuni’s kamandal and sprinkled it on all the three sadhus, they became six-month-old babies. Then the mother fed the gods to them.
When the three gods became babies, the three goddesses (Parvati, Saraswati and Lakshmi) reached the earth and begged for forgiveness from Mother Anasuya. All the three gods accepted their mistake and requested to be born from mother’s womb. The three gods took birth as Dattatreya. Since then Mata Anasuya is worshiped as the daughter-in-law.
