Govardhan Puja 2022: Govardhan Puja is performed on the next day of Diwali. It is also known as Annakoot in some parts of the country. But this year due to solar eclipse, Govardhan Puja will not happen on the next day of Diwali. Diwali is on October 24, but Govardhan Puja will be performed on October 26. Lord Krishna, Govardhan Parvat and cows are worshiped on the day of Govardhan Puja. It is considered auspicious to offer 56 or 108 types of dishes to Lord Krishna on the day of Govardhan Puja. These dishes are called ‘Annakoot’.

When is Govardhan Puja or Annakoot celebrated?

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Annakoot is celebrated on the very next day of Diwali. But this year due to solar eclipse, Govardhan Puja will be celebrated on 26 October. The festival of Bhai Dooj will also be celebrated on this day.

Method of Govardhan Puja

To perform Govardhan Puja, first of all make a picture of Govardhan with cow dung in the courtyard of the house. After this, worship Lord Govardhan by lighting roli, rice, kheer, batase, water, milk, betel, saffron, flowers and lamps. It is said that on this day, worshiping Lord Govardhan with a sincere heart with the help of rituals, the blessings of Lord Krishna remain throughout the year.

Mythology related to Govardhan Puja

It is believed that Lord Krishna had saved thousands of creatures and human lives from the wrath of Lord Indra by lifting the huge Govardhan mountain in his little finger to protect the people of Braj. Shri Krishna worshiped the Govardhan mountain by crushing Indra’s pride. On this day people make Govardhan in their homes from cow dung. Some people worship the mountain of Govardhan with cow dung and some people make Govardhan God on the ground with cow dung.
