He said that people can never forget the innumerable sacrifices of our freedom movement in which lakhs of lives were lost and many families were destroyed. He said that humiliating these martyrs in this ‘shameful way’ cannot be termed as mere reckless or senseless statement. Criticizing Kangana Ranaut, Varun tweeted, “Never insult to Mahatma Gandhi ji’s sacrifice and penance, Once the respect of his killer, and now the scorn of the sacrifices of millions of freedom fighters from Shaheed Mangal Pandey to Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and more. He wrote, “I have said very clearly that the revolution of 1857 was the first freedom struggle, which was suppressed and as a result the atrocities and cruelty of the British increased and after almost a century we were given freedom in the begging bowl of Gandhiji. Ranaut, who received the Padma Shri award this week, also targeted the Congress in her statement on the channel’s program. “If we get freedom like ‘begging’ then is it freedom? What did the British leave in the name of Congress? They were an extension of the British.”

Congress leader Salman Nizami said, “This statement is an insult to our freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the freedom of India.
