The Ashes 2021-22: MELBOURNE: England veteran pacer James Anderson has set a new record for the third day of the Ashes Test. Anderson broke the record by dismissing Australia vice-captain and super batsman Steve Smith. This is Smith’s eighth wicket. Smith was clean bowled in Melbourne. With this, Indian captain Virat Kohli has moved up to the second position in the list of batsmen who have taken more wickets for Anderson.
Anderson has dismissed Kohli seven times. Anderson proves once again that age is just a number. The 39-year-old, who continues to bowl without losing his bowling sharpness, has dismissed Smith and Kohli twice this year. As the two legendary batsmen in modern cricket, the wickets of Kohli and Smith are enticing to any bowler. What sets Anderson apart from others is that he has been able to achieve it so many times.
The Ashes 2021-22: Anderson is the second highest wicket-taker in Tests after Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. He has taken 639 wickets in 168 Tests. This includes 31 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls. Anderson is the highest Test wicket-taker among pacers. Anderson also holds the record for most Test wickets by a current cricketer.
In reply, Australia were bowled out for 267. Marcus Harris (76), David Warner (38) and Travis Head (27) were the main contributors to Australia’s improvement. Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 24. James Anderson took four wickets while Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood took two wickets each. Ben Stokes and Jack Leach took one wicket each.
After giving up the lead in the second innings, England were 31 for four at stumps on the third day. England are 51 runs behind with six wickets in hand. England lost Haseeb Hameed (7), Zack Crowley (5), David Malan (0) and Jack Leach (0). Joe Root (12) and Ben Stotox (2) are at the crease. Mitchell Starc and Scoot Boland took two wickets each.
If they lose to Melbourne, England will lose the series. Despite his excellent batting performance against England this year, Joe Root has been a huge failure as a captain. Root have won just four of their last 14 matches this year. With the Ashes Test, Root could be thrown out of the captaincy.
